Juuso Wahlsten Pool Final: Tight Battle from Start to Finish – Finland U21 Ultimately Stronger
The first final of the Juuso Wahlsten Pool was a tight matchup from the opening whistle. Canada entered the game with noticeably more intensity than in the exhibition games and took the lead when Tessa Galandy slipped the ring past Finnish goaltender Veera Tilander from the corner of the goal. Finland equalized before the first break as Hilla Haataja fired a precise shot into the top corner.
In the second period, Canada regained the lead during a delayed penalty, as Dylan Pighin found the back of the net with a stunning shot. Finland immediately called a timeout and responded with strong offensive pressure, but Canadian defenders together with their goaltender Aeva Lott stood firm. Close to the end of the period, Finland managed to get the ring into the net once more, but the goal was rejected due to a crease violation. Canada held a 2–1 lead heading into the long intermission.
Early in the third period, Finland earned a two-player power play, took full advantage of it and tied the game. Both teams created numerous scoring chances and breakaway opportunities, but solid defending and strong goaltending kept the score tied. The final period began with the game still wide open, but Finland quickly struck again to take the lead. Ella Tarssanen sealed the 4–2 victory for Finland with a brilliant effort, weaving through the defense and lifting the ring over the Canadian goalie’s shoulder. Canada pushed hard for an equalizer, but Finland’s Tilander, also named the team’s best player, turned aside every attempt with confidence. Canada’s best player was Tessa Galandy (1+1), who played a key role in both of her team’s goals.
The second and deciding final will be played tomorrow at 13:45 at Wemasto Arena, where the Juuso Wahlsten Pool champion will be crowned. Another fast-paced and skillful contest is surely on the way!
